About
“All the world is full of inscape and chance left free to act falls into an order as well as purpose…”
Gerard Manley Hopkins (1873)
Chance Finds Us is an artist led project, which examines the developing relationship between a group of eight artists (currently) based in the North East of England.
The artists that constitute the group are, Sarah Bray, Alex Charrington, Rachael Clewlow, Peter J. Evans, James Hugonin, Nick Kennedy, Anne Vibeke Mou and Richard Rigg. Their profiles range from emerging, early career to established and internationally respected.
The work of these artists is characterized by a particular rigour, resolve and pace, with its foundations in a systematic or ritualistic approach to making. Their practice extends into drawing, painting, sculpture and installation, the commonalities often manifested through carefully orchistrated processes unfolding over lengthy periods of time.
A number of intellectual, philosophical and art historical connections present themselves within the group, which we here seek the opportunity to explore in depth through critical engagement.
Chance Finds Us is intended as an open door to this exploration, a discussion of the various complexities encountered in the process towards understanding how, and perhaps why, such a convergence of similar artistic practice exists. Through this undertaking we hope to create an opening chapter to further activity and long-term relationships between artists, writers, curators (and other interested folk).
The blog is initiated/edited by the artist writer Iris Priest and will trace her involvement with the group during a period of research, which will culminate in a commissioned piece of writing.
(supported through a Turning Point North East Critical Dialogue bursary)

A beautifully written and presented blog.
Wonderful work too, I particularly love the work that involves drawing.
Will be following this project with interest.
